Migraine drugs to be fully funded
Rizatriptan Wafers, a medication that treats migraine headaches, will be fully funded from June 1, government drug-buying agency Pharmac said.
The wafers, which have a brand name Maxalt Melt, dissolve on the tongue and are used by people who have difficulty swallowing tablets and who can't tolerate an alternative medication sumatriptan.
"This is a step forward for people who suffer migraines," said Pharmac's deputy medical director Dilky Rasiah.
Migraines affect about 15 percent of adults and about 30 percent of people who suffer from them don't respond to, or can't take, sumatriptan.
